To Know Christ and to Make Him Known

Troubleshooting

A few members have encountered problems and/or questions when using the First Presbyterian website and the Website Committee has offered the following solutions/answers.  Please scroll through the questions to see if your concern is addressed and try the solution offered.  If your concern is not here, or if the solution offered does not work, please write a note about the issue and leave it in the church office.  They will be happy to pass it on to the website committee.  (If you are able, you may email your concerns to info@firstpresfd.org.)

When I tried to email by clicking on an email link, a page was brought up.  When I typed in a message  and hit "send" --
The message went away, but the person never received it.
          I got an error message.
The message was in an "Outbox" in my computer, but I couldn't send it.

Solution:  The default email setting link on many websites (including FirstpresFD.org) is often Outlook, which is a program included in many computers that you can use to handle email.  If you are using a web-based email carrier such as Yahoo Mail, GMail, etc. and do not use Outlook, you will need to copy the email address listed, open your own email carrier (GMail, Yahoo, HotMail, etc), start a new message, and paste or type the address into the "To:      "    box on the new email form.  Another solution is to initialize your Outlook program to handle outgoing email messages.

When I clicked on a page it went blank and nothing came up.  Sometimes when this happens I eventually get an error message.

Solution:  When computer traffic is high, it can take longer to download information from the internet--especially pages with a lot of pictures or other space-consuming data.  If it takes too long, the internet provider will quit trying to load the page on your computer and send an error message.  You may have to be patient and wait if information on the "computer highway" is travelling slowly, and if you get the error message, just click "Refresh" or hit the back button and try again.  The computer "traffic jam" usually doesn't last too long and the next time your request will go right through.  However, some areas and some periods of the day have more problem with this situation and you may need to try a little later.

My Mac won’t play a Windows Media video.

Solution:  A Macintosh computer will play a file created in Windows Media video (WMV) with a free downloadable product called Flip4Mac.  When a WMV format file is downloaded and Flip4Mac player is not on the computer, it won’t automatically open the file, but you have the choice to save the file to your computer; go ahead an save the file.  Then open a new window in your Internet browser application (Safari, Firefox, Explorer, etc.) and enter the following url:
http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm

Scroll down the page to WMV Player (the player is the free version) and click on the “Get Now” link. Download and install.  You shouldn’t have to shut down your browser to install this product.  The same is true if you have an older version of the software, except you’ll be taken to an update window rather than having to get new software.

The next time you encounter a Windows Media file you should have no problem playing the video because your computer has the program to convert it to one that will work on your computer.
